A new CNBC report examines how OneRail is partnering with Nvidia to use artificial intelligence to help retailers make faster and more efficient delivery decisions. The companies have launched OmniStar, a platform that evaluates delivery options for individual orders and determines the most effective carrier, route, and delivery method. The technology has already been deployed with several customers.
The larger opportunity goes beyond faster routing. Last-mile delivery is one of the most expensive parts of the retail supply chain, and many companies still rely on fragmented systems and manual processes to determine how orders should be fulfilled. OneRail says OmniStar can reduce delivery decisions that previously took around 20 minutes to roughly 2½ minutes, potentially helping retailers lower costs, improve margins, and respond more quickly to changing conditions.
The platform combines Nvidia’s AI technology with OneRail’s proprietary logistics data, which includes a network of more than 12 million drivers and over 1,000 logistics partners. By analyzing a broad range of delivery scenarios in real time, the system can determine which option makes the most economic and operational sense for each order. OneRail says a large tire distributor using OmniStar could save $40 million over three years through more efficient use of its delivery resources.
OneRail is also positioning the technology as a way for smaller retailers to compete with much larger companies such as Amazon and Walmart. As consumers increasingly expect fast and convenient delivery, smaller businesses can struggle to match the logistics capabilities of retail giants. OneRail’s partnership with FedEx, announced earlier this year, could further expand access to same-day delivery services and strengthen the company’s ability to serve smaller retailers.
But the technology still faces the challenge of proving that AI-driven logistics can deliver consistent savings at scale. Retailers must balance speed, cost, and customer experience while dealing with constantly changing delivery conditions. The success of platforms such as OmniStar will depend on whether businesses can translate faster decision-making into meaningful improvements in their overall supply chains.
The article ultimately presents the OneRail-Nvidia partnership as an example of how AI could change the economics of last-mile delivery. By giving retailers access to real-time analysis of thousands of delivery possibilities, the technology could make sophisticated logistics decision-making available to businesses of different sizes. If adoption continues, AI may become an increasingly important tool for retailers trying to deliver faster while keeping fulfillment costs under control.
